Senior Research Analyst - Environmental Economics: Corporate Services (Global)

The role

The Senior Research Analyst will be a key member of the Corporate Services Team, dedicated to the support, development and delivery of Trucost’s services to global corporations. The analyst will contribute to and be responsible for managing a broad range of research projects - focused primarily on the measurement of environmental performance across companies, value chains, products and services. Fundamental to Trucost’s approach is the use of natural capital valuation as a means of helping companies understand their impact and dependency on nature. A Senior Research Analyst must demonstrate a sound understanding of environmental economics and how natural capital valuation techniques can be applied in a corporate context. The successful candidate will be a key player in Trucost’s delivery team for the Natural Capital Protocol sector guides. Senior Research Analysts will also work with account managers in managing client relationships and be involved in some sales support work including technical input for proposals and meetings with prospective clients.

 

Key Tasks

  • In depth research on companies, industry sectors and thematics relevant to the corporate market.
  • Provide service delivery on consultative research projects. This will include providing insights and recommendations based on an analysis of the environmental performance of companies, their value chains and products using Trucost’s proprietary methodologies, environmental footprinting tools, and other primary and secondary data sources.
  • Use natural capital valuation techniques to measure and understand a company’s dependency on nature.
  • Project Management: The Senior Research Analyst will be responsible for the delivery of research projects on time and on budget. This will include the development of detailed project plans and the management of internal resources and managing tasks being performed by other researchers or disciplines (e.g. IT, Marketing) who are part of a globally dispersed team.
  • Stay abreast of technical and scientific developments in environmental footprinting and natural capital accounting, and incorporate these into Trucost products as appropriate and in consultation with Trucost’s Head of Research.
  • Communicate the results of research projects to clients at a senior executive level.
  • Represent Trucost at meetings with prospects alongside the account manager, effectively recognising their needs and conveying Trucost’s value proposition.
  • Product development: Identify opportunities within the corporate market for applying Trucost’s data and analytics.

 

Preferred Experience

The ideal candidate would have some experience in a number of these areas:

  • An undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline, which include economics and finance, natural resource economics and environmental sciences, with a post-graduate degree in a related subject. 
  • At least 2 years professional experience in environmental economics. 5 years would be preferable. 
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize information and develop business insights from detailed technical analysis and research on natural capital and environmental performance.  
  • A background in service delivery or research, preferably with an environmental consultancy or data provider. 
  • Project management experience. 
  • A good understanding of natural capital, including how it is measured and applied. 
  • A good understanding of business and how sustainability can be integrated into corporate decision-making related to: Procurement, environmental marketing, risk management, investor relations, environmental reporting, and product or supply chain optimization. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including confidence presenting to large groups of people. 
  • The candidate should be conscious of detail and numerically proficient with natural curiosity and an innovative approach to problem solving. Advanced word-processing and spreadsheet skills are expected. 
  • Foreign language skills will be viewed favourably.

The Role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Business Development Manager (BDM)/ Account Manager to join the Financial Services team. You would be dedicated to the support and development of Trucost’s services to banks, asset managers and pension funds, primarily in France. The role would include growing Trucost’s business in France and managing existing accounts. This is a varied role which requires a flexible individual to work successfully independently as well as part of a team. The role would initially be based out of our busy London office and offers the opportunity for travel. 

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Developing the strategic approach for growing sales in your assigned market area in collaboration with the Head of Financial Institutions Business.
  • Representing Trucost at meetings with prospects, effectively recognising their needs and conveying Trucost’s value proposition
  • Writing proposals
  • Prospecting, generating leads and networking
  • Working with clients to advise on integration of Trucost data and research in their investment processes, support them in use of Trucost’s data and answer technical questions.
  • Following up new business opportunities and setting up meetings
  • Planning and preparing presentations
  • Establishing and maintaining client accounts
  • Ownership of a sales target

 

Essential Skills

  • Fluency in English and French
  • Experience in sustainability, preferably in a business development or consulting role
  • Excellent business acumen, good negotiation skills and persuasiveness
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including confidence presenting to large groups, proposal writing, and enjoy networking and meeting new people
  • Be self-motivated and results oriented, with a positive, “can do” attitude

 

Preferred Experience

  • The ideal candidate would have some experience in a number of these areas:
  • A background in sales or management consulting to financial institutions or large corporations, helping them understand sustainability in economic terms and embed it in their business strategies
  • A background being part of a responsible investment team for a financial institution
  • A good understanding of  how financial markets operate and a knowledge of some of the following sustainability areas that financial institutions are involved in, such as, mainstreaming ESG integration, UNPRI, SRI, environmental fund creation, environmental risk analysis in different asset classes, sustainability solutions for banking clients.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including confidence presenting to large groups of people and enjoy networking and meeting new people
  • Knowledge of key environmental issues that companies face
  • Understanding of some of the following sustainability areas including, natural capital accounting, sustainable supply chains, integrated reporting, Life Cycle Analysis and Input-Output modelling techniques.

The Role

The senior research analyst will be a key member of the Financial Institutions Team, dedicated to the support and development of Trucost’s services to banks, asset managers and pension funds globally. The analyst will carry out research on the environmental performance of global listed companies, funds and thematics including environmental resource use and externality pricing and impact on shareholder value. The analyst will contribute to and be responsible for managing a broad range of research projects. They will also work with the business development managers in managing client relationships and be involved in some sales support work including technical input for proposals and meetings with prospective clients.

 

Key Tasks

  • In depth research on companies, industry sectors, regions, economies and thematics to report to the investment community.
  • Analyse the environmental performance of investment funds and credit/loan portfolios using Trucost’s proprietary methods.
  • Research and update financial and environmental information on global listed companies (e.g. MSCI ACWI & FTSE All World) using Trucost’s proprietary database.
  • Account Management – working with clients to advise on the integration of Trucost data and research in their investment and due diligence processes; support them in the use of Trucost’s data and software and answer technical questions.
  • Project Management of bespoke or consultancy projects.
  • Representing Trucost at meetings with prospects alongside the business development manager, effectively recognising their needs and conveying Trucost’s value proposition.
  • Product development: identifying opportunities within the financial sector for applying Trucost’s data and analytics.

 

Preferred Experience

The ideal candidate would have some experience in a number of these areas:

  • An undergraduate degree in Economics, Finance, Mathematics or similar subjects, and preferably a relevant post-graduate degree in the natural resource economics or sustainability field.
  • A background in research, ideally as an ESG or investment analyst within a financial institution such as an asset manager, sell-side research firm or investment bank. Experience in an investment decision making environment.
  • A good understanding of global financial markets and a knowledge of some of the following sustainability areas that financial institutions are involved in, such as, mainstreaming ESG integration, UNPRI, environmental fund or index creation, environmental risk analysis in different asset classes, sustainability solutions and green credit policies for banking clients.
  • A good understanding of environmental impacts and natural capital, including how they are measured and could be applied to investments. Experience in identifying, evaluating and mitigating potential reputational risks and credit losses resulting from environmental issues will be viewed favourably.
  • Knowledge of environmental measurement standards, environmental regulation and integrated reporting.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including confidence presenting to large groups of people and enjoy networking and meeting new people
  • Excellent analytical and project management skills.
  • The candidate should be conscious of detail and numerically proficient with natural curiosity and an innovative approach to problem solving. Advanced word-processing and spreadsheet skills are expected.
  • Applicants must hold, be studying for, or be willing to study for the Investment Management Certificate (IMC) or alternatively the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Level 1 or relevant Chartered Institute of Securities and Investments (CISI) qualifications.
