Senior Business Development & Account Director for Trucost

Location: New York, NY, USA

Trucost is a global research and information business headquartered in London, with a rapidly growing roster of important investor and corporate clients in North America.  The company pioneered the use of quantitative financial analysis of environmental performance (including carbon and water foot printing of investment portfolios, Puma’s environmental profit and loss EP&L account, financial valuation of water scarcity, etc.) and continues to be recognized by the market for leadership and innovative solutions in carbon and water accounting, supply chain analyses, and natural capital valuation.  

Trucost provides data, tools and insights so corporations can understand financial risks related to their enterprise, communicate environmental performance, and develop new business opportunities with greener products. Trucost has spent the last 15 years researching, standardizing and validating environmental data for the world's largest companies and investors. Central to this approach is our advanced environmental profiling model enabling us to calculate a company’s environmental dependencies across its value chain, even if this information is not disclosed. The Role

We have an exciting opportunity to join the rapidly growing North American team and manage business development for Trucost solutions provided to multinational corporations.  You will develop and execute on a go to market strategy for your assigned industry sectors and work with companies to communicate Trucost value proposition and product solutions.  You will be responsible for achieving a sales target and managing key accounts in the US, Canada, and Mexico.  The role requires excellent customer relations, public speaking and verbal communication skills, as well as a working understanding of how different business functions (such as procurement, investor relations, marketing, risk functions, R&D and others) use environmental data in their decision making.    

The role is based out of our New York office (highly qualified candidates in other regions of the US will potentially be considered) and is an opportunity for an experienced, enthusiastic and self-directed individual who is eager to innovate and lead.  You will be part of a very specialized, highly talented global team that wants to create powerful, positive societal change and help the world transition to a low carbon, more resource efficient economy.   

 

 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Developing and executing on a strategic approach for growing sales in North America for your assigned industry sectors.
  • Representing Trucost at meetings with prospective clients, effectively recognising their needs and conveying Trucost’s value proposition
  • Working with clients to advise them on how to integrate Trucost data and research into business decision-making.
  • Working closely with the Trucost marketing team to develop thought leadership and awareness for Trucost solutions in your assigned industry sectors; working closely with Trucost technical Research Analysts to deliver services
  • Prospecting and generating leads by writing articles, speaking at industry events and identifying   sustainability related issues and trends and converting them into business opportunities
  • Writing proposals; following up on new business opportunities and setting up meetings; planning and preparing presentations; closing on sales; establishing and maintaining client accounts

 

Essential Skills

  • Business development and technical, consultative sales experience to large multinational corporations
  • Understanding of corporate environmental sustainability best practices, in particular related to quantifying supply chain risks, accounting for environmental (carbon, water, etc.) impacts, and business and investment risks and opportunities  - and the ability to distill this understanding into a business plan for Trucost solutions
  • Ability to translate technical, quantitative sustainability issues and Trucost solutions to a general business audience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including confidence presenting to large groups at public forums, and the ability to write compelling, articulate proposals for innovative Trucost sustainability solutions.
  • Business acumen, good negotiation skills and persuasiveness
  • Personable, and enjoy networking and meeting new people
  • Fast learner, self-motivated and results oriented, with a positive, “can do” attitude who is able to plan and execute work independently

 

Preferred Experience

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 8+ years professional work experience (following graduation from a college or university) with experience in a number of these areas:

  • Experience in sustainability-related management consulting or sales
  • Thorough understanding of corporate sustainability programs; how corporations are quantifying and disclosing environmental performance and natural capital risks, why they are doing it, as well as the organizations involved (such as SASB, CDP, IIRC, Natural Capital Declaration, etc.)
  • Experience working in one or more of the following industry sectors:  electronics, automotive, hospitality, mining, energy and power generation, or consumer products
  • Knowledge of how to apply some of the following technical tools: carbon foot printing and accounting, natural capital accounting, water risk assessment, ESG risk and opportunity analysis, integrated reporting and valuation, Life Cycle Assessment, environmental data validation. 
  • Experience with business development activities
  • Speaking and presenting to executive audiences and large groups of people
  • Experience working with global teams and fluency in additional languages (in particular Spanish or French) will be looked upon favorably
  • Ownership of a sales target

The role

The Consultant will be a key member of the research team in North America, dedicated to the support, development and delivery of Trucost’s services to its global client base. The Consultant will contribute technical expertise and lead teams conducting detailed environmental analyses across a broad range of client projects - focused primarily on the measurement of environmental performance across products, services, operations and supply chains. Fundamental to Trucost’s approach is the use of natural capital valuation as a means of helping companies and investors understand their dependency on natural systems to grow revenue in financial terms. The Consultant must have an excellent understanding of environmental impact measurement and how natural capital valuation techniques can be applied to provide insights to clients. The Consultant will support Corporate Services account managers in the management of strategic accounts including the identification of new opportunities, preparation of sales materials and managing client relationship before, during and after service delivery. 

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and participate in international research teams conducting in-depth analytical research on the environmental performance of companies across their operations, supply chains, and products, to support decision-making.
  • Develop technical approaches to meet client needs
  • Provide high-quality insights and recommendations from complex information for consultative projects
  • Clearly communicate insights and technical approaches to clients verbally and in writing, including documenting analytical methodologies for reports and developing graphs and charts appropriate for use by senior executives 
  • Support the North American account managers in developing technical approaches for proposals or RFP/RFI responses that recognizing client needs and convey Trucost’s value proposition 
  • Work collaboratively with a diverse team across multiple offices to conduct research and ensure the quality of assessment findings

 

Essential Skills

  • Experience in the quantification of environmental data to support organizational decision-making
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including confidently presenting complex information to clients in ways that they can easily understand and inform their actions
  • Personable, with a demonstrated strength in planning and executing work assignments independently, and as part of an international research team
  • Self-motivated, organized, detail-oriented, with a positive, “can do” attitude

 

Preferred Experience

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years professional work experience (following graduation from a college or university) with experience in a number of these areas:

  • A background in environmental research, preferably with an environmental consultancy, including technical experience conducting environmental footprinting, life cycle assessment (LCA), Extended Economic Input-Output (EEIO) Modeling, supply chain environmental impact analysis, or natural capital valuation. 
  • A good understanding of business and how sustainability can be integrated into corporate decision-making related to: Procurement, risk management, environmental reporting, and product or supply chain optimization.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and synthesize data and develop business insights from detailed technical analysis and research on corporate natural capital and environmental performance.
  • The candidate should be conscious of detail and numerically proficient with natural curiosity and an innovative approach to problem solving. Advanced word-processing and spreadsheet skills are expected. 
  • Fluency in additional languages (in particular Spanish, French, or Mandarin) will be looked upon favorably.
